CONTEXTUAL PRACTICE

I really enjoyed experimenting with tape to create my own typeface. It wasn't particularly hard for me to come out with different styles and as soon as I have identified the style of typeface that I wanted to further develop I had no hesitation in carrying on doing the whole alphabet following the same pattern. I found the whole experience it very relaxing, interesting and I am very happy with what is coming out of it.
For what it concerns my outcome of the holiday task I think that the layout could have been better. The photos are well related to the terms, except for one or two that maybe people could struggle to identify because of the quality of the images. Overall I think that the majority of the photos are nice and well linked to the terms, though I should have presented them better.
RESEARCH
Looking at the presentation I was particularly drawn to this project. I really liked the idea of composing a typeface using little movable sections with different engravings, which create very nice patterns on the letters, making the typeface even more interesting.

And, I guess because of the shape, I suddenly connected it to the famous castle of Frederick II, Holy Roman Emperor. In fact its form is very unusual for a castle and its modernity is astonishing considering that it dates back to the 13th century. It is easy to imaging to move around his towers, like with the sections of the typeface, which seem resting on the edgy and geometric forms of the main structure and not included in the construction using curves and soft shapes.

OUTCOME - Black Tape
Specimen:
I have further developed the basic version of the typeface experimenting with triangular shapes and negative effects to accentuate its angular look even more.
OUTCOME - Object
I am not very happy of how the outcome has turned out, between the two typefaces I prefer "Angular". I guess it's because I didn't have time to make the whole typeface illustrating it as I was doing at the beginning as I feel that this one may be too cartoonish. Also, some letters are hard to read, so I don't think it's the best between the two.

Creating a typeface with objects have been a bit confusing at first, but I think that the process of drawing the items helped me to get familiar with them and gave me some time to better observe and think about their potentials. I am happy with the object that I chose to make my typeface with and I believe I was very lucky to find such an original and interesting item, which I can shape very easily into letters. I think I will develop the typeface making illustrations of the object for each letter.
RESEARCH
I took as references rock and metal bands' merchandise which logos, especially the Iron Maiden and ACDC ones, resemble my typeface:

Peter Saville with font of Wim Crouwel
I consider it an example of how you can highlight a font in a very simple way. I think this album cover is very clean and elegant, even though is really minimalistic.
Peter Saville
I believe this is one of the most iconic album covers ever designed. In this case the title occupies almost the totality of the cover when it's completely opened, but when the vinyl cover is closed the only letter that the viewer can see is "O". I think it is a very well thought out layout, simple and bold that sparks the curiosity of people and impress them every time when they interact with it. And as a collection of songs the title is very self-explanatory.
RESEARCH
I really like the visual illusion created on this typefaces: it seems quarried, as if the content was carved out.
RESEARCH
Jas Bhachu Rubik's Cube font generator
I was very impressed with this work as I think is a very original idea that combines the interaction with the object and the physical gesture of printing the letters on your own. It is a very playful approach to typography, which can help to attract the attention of the public, stimulating their curiosity.

Working on the object typeface it's taking me too long, as I'm making almost life-size realistic illustrations of the object. So I think I will need to make smaller representations of the stethoscope, therefore less detailed and realistic, even though I really like how the illustrations are turning out.
Regarding the tape typeface, it reminds me of the logos of rock and metal bands such as ACDC and Iron Maiden. So, while talking with the tutor, I came to the conclusion that I could print it on a t-shirt to place it in the rock metal context. The print should be imprecise, I'll try to give it a worn out look and also to use colours like black, white and red, to match rock t-shirts vibe.

Intro 1998
What I find very interesting of this album cover is big experimentation behind it. They managed to create a very diverse campaign by changing location to the LED units and taking photos of them during different time of the day ending up with multiple and different outcome every time. They brought the experimentation even further making a very suggestive video of the set up in those different location, playing with lights, time-lapse and reflective surfaces like water.
